Evaluating Web Sites
Well, this one is not fake - but is seriously flawed. Check out the website created by Stormfront on Martin Luther King, Jr. Looks authentic, claims to be historically accurate but is created by a white supremacist group looking to tear down MLK's work and character. NOTE: This site, www.martinlutherking.org, is blocked so we were unable to view it.

http://www.crystalinks.com/ I'm not sure if you're looking for something like this, but this is my favorite example of why students need to evaluate websites, because it's NOT fake. Just read her autobiography and have the kids decide if they'd use the website. This website comes up at or near the top of google search results for ancient Rome, mythology, and other commonly searched topics.

I also use www.allaboutexploreres.com as an example of website that looks professional and has all the information needed to give a successful evaluation. Once the kids start reading the information, especially on Christopher Columbus since they are more familiar with him, they start getting suspicious; links to actual real sites are included. If you have not used this site it was created by a teacher and a librarian, in PA, to help teach website evaluation. It is an awesome teaching tool.
