SERVICE LEARNING IN THE LIBRARY
Library Science I
Grades 12
Course is limited to two students per period. The purpose of this
course is to help students use a library media center more effectively and
also prepare them to work as part of the media center staff. Through
individualized instruction and on the job training, the following will
be covered: value and purpose of library media centers; policies,
resources, organization, and staff responsibilities; audio visual equipment and
materials; classification and arrangement of materials in media
enters; the electronic card catalog; reference sources; indexes and
periodicals; processing, storage, retrieval, circulation and on-line searching.
Prerequisite: Conference with Librarian and teacher recommendations.
Library Science II
Grades 12
Reinforce objectives of Library Science I and perform duties as part of
the media center staff. Prerequisite: Library Science I and conference
with Librarian.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER ASSISTANT
PREREQUISITE: Consent of the librarian and roster office.
Must receive permission of the instructor prior to enrollment.
The library media center assistant aids the Media Specialist in
various aspects of the media program including circulation, shelving of
the collection, processing of new materials, housekeeping duties,
publicity and promotion. They will also help patrons with
information-related technologies, such as: on-line catalog, EBSCO
magazine index, SIRS Resources online, Electric Library online,PROQUEST. ONLINE
CATALOG, CIRCULATION DESK AND FILEMAKER.
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn more
about the details of library media center work. It is a hands-on work
experience course, which allows students to:
1. learn more about general operations of a library media center
2. use technology and computers
3. deepen their understanding of information sources
4. develop their special projects to enhance and support the media
center
5. assist patrons seeking information or reading guidance
Grading will be based on the practical aspects of on-the-job
assignments, daily assignments, dependability, effort and hard
work.
